Curriculum Update Franklin Central Supervisory Union
Sara Denny, Curriculum Coordinator
January and February 2004 Mathematics
Groups of teachers from Fairfield, St. Albans Town and St. Albans City have taken up the challenge to try out two different programs to teach mathematics to our K - 8 students in a standards-based way. This project has been a high priority this year. K - 5 teachers are wrapping up their piloting of Everyday Math and will soon begin a unit in the Investigations program. Middle level mathematics teachers have completed their pilot with Connected Math and will begin with Math Thematics. Responses from the teachers indicate that the decisions will be tough to make. The Math Task Force will gather data and make decisions by April 2004.
Health
This group of nurses and educators has hit a stride in gathering information and assessments to complete a curriculum for use by teachers of many content areas. We believe that making healthy choices has become one of the most important things we can teach our young people. We further believe that all the adults seen by students can share in the promotion of what is healthy and safe. This project is slated to be done by June 2004.
French
A small group of teachers has started working on developing a K - 8 French Curriculum. The plan is to take the rest of this year and part of next school year to complete this project. We want to round out our task force with community members who might be interested in world languages. Meetings are during Early Release Days. If you are interested in developing a French curriculum and want to join us, please call Sara Denny at 524-4321.
Teacher Evaluation
With the leadership of Beth Loiselle and Marilyn Grunewald, teachers and administrators are working to tailor an evaluation system that fits FCSU. The group has agreed that the system must promote teacher growth, even for veteran teachers. We plan to complete this project in the seven remaining meetings, this school year. Members of the committee will keep staff members back at their schools informed about the work at staff meetings, so that there are no surprises in the final product!
