Sportsmen, Inc. is dedicated to
conservation and education concerning our wildlife and natural resources. The
origins of the club date back to the late 1800's, when known as the Brattleboro Rifle Club,
with activities centered on rifle shooting. In the early 1900's the
organization became known as the Windham
County Fish & Game
Club, a name kept until 1940 when the club changed its name to Sportsmen, Inc.
In 1972, Sportsmen, Inc. merged with Abenaki Archery, and the club's interests
expanded into hunting, fishing, trapping, muzzle loading, trap shooting, and
archery.
We are
affiliated with the National Rifle Association, the Civilian Marksmanship
Program, and are one of the largest sporting groups in Vermont. Our members include of men and
women like you who are concerned with firearm safety, laws and regulations,
wildlife management, hunter education, and conservation of resources for future
generations.
Club facilities are used for many purposes beyond being a range for its
members. Local scout troops hold overnight campouts on club grounds. The Guilford Pitstoppers
snowmobile club holds their monthly winter meetings in the clubhouse. Volunteer members of this club teach
approximately 4 hunter safety courses at Sportsmen, Inc. each year. Members offer trapper education, boating
safety and other courses here regularly.
Each year the club holds an open house for local kids with trout fishing
in our stocked pond, archery, trap and air rifle instruction.
Sportsmen, Inc. is a leader in
statewide programs like Working for Wildlife. President Don Rosinski
leads the local effort in teaming members and non-members in projects to
improve habitat for wildlife. This program links volunteers with private
landowners for projects such as releasing old apple trees so they can continue
to provide feed.
Our club is a member of the Vermont Federation of
Sportsmen Clubs, and during legislative session, we send representatives to the
monthly meetings. Club members are kept informed of legislation that could
affect our interests. The club has sent lobbing contingents to Montpelier on occasions when needed. We also
invite all local representatives to the annual "Venison Stew Night"
held before Vermont's
legislators convene. This allows local sportsmen to meet their representatives
and talk about issues concerning them.
Sportsmen Inc. maintains a fund in
memory of Tom Maisner, a sportsmen, and safety instructor who left us too soon.
Moneys are raised through donations and a memorial shoot each year. The
club uses this to send several people each year to programs like Scouting, Green Mountain
Conservation Camp and the Outdoor Women program.
This club along with individual
members have contributed money for the purchase of whitetail deer decoys on two
occasions. Local Fish and Wildlife
Wardens will use this tool to stop unethical hunting both in and out of deer
season.
