VOCA Grants

The Vermont Old Cemetery Association offers a grant to anyone interested in restoring an abandoned or neglected cemetery. VOCA now makes grants up to $500.00 and on large jobs may make additional funds available.

Grants Administrator's Report First, I thank Tom Giffin for taking over the Grant Program this summer while I was on vacation. Secondly, I commend him for accepting the position of President of VOCA doer the coming year. This year twelve grants were approved, however, as of this writing only three have been completed and approved for payment and one of those was actually completed, except for the paper work, in 2000. Hopefully, now that the work season is over there will be a few more that send in their final papers and pictures. I encourage all of you who have cemeteries in your town or area that need work to contact the town officers responsible whether they are selectmen or cemetery commissioners and try to get them to provide some money for that purpose in 2002. Most towns are making their next year's budgets now and if you wait until next spring they won't have money allotted. As most of you know, VOCA makes grants of up to $500 and while this doesn't go far in a large job if you hire it all done, it can go a long ways if you can get a few volunteers to work on a project. There are many small burial grounds around that truly meet the "abandoned and neglected" criteria that VOCA was formed to try to improve. A few volunteers could make a difference here. Work done by all volunteers no longer requires matching money from the sponsoring town or persons. Work that is paid for requires a match of one dollar for every two that VOCA puts in, up to $500 on VOCA's part. Lets' all try to get more grants completed in the coming year, I expect to be around next summer and would be willing to work with volunteers on a limited basis. Write, or call me for grant applications. Arthur L. Hyde, Grants Administrator, 1991 Upper Plain, Bradford NH 05033, telephone 802-222-4088.
