In 1996 the children of a Greek Orthodox Priest found an abandoned cemetery in Brattleboro, VT. The Priest came to the Brattleboro Probation Office and asked if the work crew would be able to clean up the cemetery. He took the work crew supervisor to the site and it was decided that the cemetery belonged to the Brattleboro Retreat.

Mr. Brian Frost an employee of the Retreat agreed to allow the Department of Corrections Work Crew to clean it up and work started immediately. After the overgrowth was removed it was obvious that some of the graves had caved in and some of the grave stones were scattered around. The work crew cleared the brush and litter, filled the caved in grave sites with dirt and placed the various grave stones at the grave nearest to where the stone was found. The brush and debris was removed and grass seed planted.

During the operation one grave stone was missing and could not be located. months later the Brattleboro Retreat contracted with the DOC Work Crew to paint the barns belonging to them. During inspection of the barns that were located one mile west of the Retreat a grave stone was found in the larger of the two barns. The caretaker of the barns explained that years ago the gravestone was removed from the old Retreat Cemetery because the Retreat Manager was worried that it might be stolen.

Prior to the celebration of Halloween the Manager directed that the stone be removed and stored in the Retreat's barn. The name on the gravestone was "Frankenstein".
