The NCTM has set some big, grade level spanning standards for our children in the United States. They are even used as a resource outside of the US. These standards are recommendations to be used by anyone who makes decisions about the mathematical instruction of students in K- 12. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your point of view, the standards are VERY broad. They are used as a framework by many states to create more specific expectations for each grade level. Vermont has created such a document titled Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). Every grade has a list of more specific criteria for students and will be fair game for local or state assessments. You may look at your child's grade level expectations here by clicking on the appropriate link. It's a great way to know what your child should be learning and how you may be able to support that learning. Check with your child's teacher for any language or concepts that are unfamiliar or confusing for you.
