All Welcome to Attend "Reminiscenses of a One-Room School" to be held on April 8, 2008 downstairs at the Vernon Town Office building directly following the Historians' short business meeting at 7:00. P.M.

Tom Johnson, currently of Dummerston, will be presenting. Mr. Johnson grew up on Pond Road a short distance from the South School.

Refreshments will be served.

The Vernon Historians are a vital part of the town of Vernon.

Membership is open to anyone interested in preserving the history of Vernon. Meetings are held the second Tuesday in January, April, July and October.

• Vernon was one of the first towns in Vermont to be settled as English settlement moved up the Connecticut River. The early settlers here experienced great hardship during the French and Indian Wars. This was the frontier at that time.
• Vernon was originally part of Hinsdale, New Hampshire which occupied both sides of the Connecticut River. When Vermont became a state, the name was changed in 1802 to Vernon, Vermont.
• Vernon Historical Museum at 4201 Fort Bridgman Road (Rt. 142) was built in 1848 with bricks from a local brick yard nearby.
• It was originally "South School", one of 5 schools in Vernon then and was used as a one-room school for over 100 years until 1954 when the present school opened.
• Pond Road Chapel was built in 1860 by the Second Advent Society. It has been changed little and is on the National Register of Historic Sites. Open ny appointment.
• Both buildings are operated by the Vernon Historians.
