Request for a Study on
Pyruvicemia Abnormalities
in FMS and CMP

Increased pyruvicemia and pyruvate / lactate ratio have been observed in FMS (Eisinger, J Amer Coll Nutr 13 : 144-148, 1994, Eisinger Lyon Med Med 28 : 851-854, 1992, Poinsignon, Myalgie in press) and in CMP (Myopain 1998).  These abnormalities, observed in other conditions (thyroid disease, alcoholism…) are in line with histochemical (Bengtsson, Arthritis Rheum 1986 ; 4 : 817-821) and NMR (Eisinger, Lyon Med Med 32 :2180-2181, 1996) perturbations observed in muscle.  Increased pyruvate / lactate ratio is probably linked to an abnormality of lactodehydrogenase (Eisinger, J Amer Coll Nutr 13 : 144-148, 1994, Eisinger, Lyon Med Med 28 : 851-854, 1992) of redox status (Eisinger, Lyon Med Med 1999) with a significant increase of oxidized forms of parameters such as ascorbate or glutathione … (pyruvate being the oxidized form of lactate).

A study of blood pyruvate and lactate is easy to perform (kitBoehringer) and not too expensive (20 dollars in France). This could be done in three groups of subjects with FMS, CMP and controls.

This study could confirm that 30 to 40% of FMS patients exhibit glycolysis abnormalities and could benefit with metabolic treatment.
