The Hermitage is located just a bit off the beaten path, nestled into the base of southern Vermont's Green Mountains and surrounded by acres of lawns and fields. Open year-round, our guests can experience an almost endless number of activities in all of Vermont's seasons. Or as our name implies, The Hermitage can be simply a retreat from the outside world. The choice is all yours.
Our history began as a simple farm house in the 18th Century when sheep and cattle outnumbered people in Vermont. This farm later became the summer estate of Bertha Eastman Berry, an editor of the renowned Social Register. From these beginnings, The Hermitage evolved into today's widely dispersed inn complex: the Main House, Wine House, Carriage House, and Brook Bound Inn. Each of the 29 rooms is decorated with superior collection of New England antiques; many have working fireplaces. Everywhere on display is a large collection of lithographs and prints by well-known artists plus hundreds of antique decoys-a veritable art gallery. Amenities include a clay tennis court, swimming pool and sauna. These comfortable and informal surroundings speak again of the meaning: country inn.
The foundation of a good inn is fine dining in a gracious manner. Our reputation for good food, well prepared and served with care, has been widely acclaimed throughout the country in newspapers, magazines and books. Gamebirds are featured every evening in the Chef's Specials, pheasant, goose, wild turkey, duck and partridges. In spring, we make our own maple syrup in the Sugar House. In Summer, we fire up the kettles again to make jams, jellies and preserves from local berries, apples and peaches. In addition to table use, these delectables find their way to our Wine & Gift Shop.
A good wine cellar enhances the enjoyment of dining. The Hermitage is honored to have received the Grand Award from the Wine Spectator as having "one of the greatest wine lists in the world" in 1984 and yearly since. Today, our cellar stocks over 40,000 bottles representing over 2,000 labels. Some of these wines are available in our Wine and Gift Shop.
The Hermitage is the culmination of an innkeepers dream to operate the inn as an extension of his home and hobbies. A gamebird farm with pheasants, ducks, geese, wild turkeys also features exotic birds from many parts of the world, including peacocks and black swans. Where else would one also find under one roof the breeding and training of English Setter dogs... all with names such as Rausan, Cliquot and Yquem? They're assistant innkeepers and will join in welcoming and making you feel at home.
A description of the inn would not be complete without mentioning the wide variety of activities available throughout the year: golf, hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, swimming, horseback riding, downhill and cross-country skiing. Visit nearby art and craft shows, sporting events, country stores and museums. Or simply wander down Vermont's many scenic and historic back-country roads. Evenings might include a local chamber music concert or quiet cocktail in our cozy fireplace lounge.
At The Hermitage we will be happy to help you plan very special vacation or getaway weekend. Every guest will be happy to something different and memorable to carry way. Come stay awhile... a warm welcome awaits you.
