The Saxtons River Playhouse
was started in the summer of 1988 as The Saxtons River Dinner Theatre,
performing four plays in the Colvin House at the Saxtons River Inn. The
program was an artistic success which demanded a larger space to accommodate
a larger audience and a broader range of theatrical possibilities.
Early in 1989,
arrangements were made to move down the street to Main Street Arts, above
the Jelly Bean Tree Crafts Shop. The Main Street Arts building had been
old Odd Fellows Hall, with a stage dating back to the year "1893." The
Playhouse still yearned for a home of its own and in 1992 it moved permanently
to Benson's Barn, formerly a country dance hall from the '40's to the '70's. |
The Saxtons River Playhouse
is one of New England's few remaining "stock" summer theatres, where young
professionals are given that first big break, the chance for the lead,
the opportunity to succeed.
