The Historical Society of Windham County was founded in 1927 for the purpose of preserving the history of Windham County. The museum is the major project of the Historical Society. The brick federal style building was constructed in 1936 and houses a collection that reflects the history of the county from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries. |

Museum Visitor Information The museum is located on the main street (Route 30) in Newfane, one of the most beautiful villages in Vermont and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors to the museum have been delighted by the quality of our collection. We invite you to visit and explore our museum and see for yourself why it has been described as "...one of the most intriguing small collections in Vermont." |

Only items which have a direct connection with Windham County's historical or cultural development are accepted for the collection. Collection highlights include many excellent early portraits, furniture from the late 18th and 19th centuries, folk art, textiles, and Civil War artifacts, including battlefield souvenirs. Local favorites are the story of the highwayman "Thunderbolt" and the history of the West River Railroad. |
