Comments from Debbie Whicker: "What do I like about [the signs]?
- the scripture references -the care descriptions -the size -the heavy weight of the [card stock]
-the font sizes (scripture in larger print, care instructions in smaller print) ...an A+ job!"

Gardening Books:
Brickell, Christopher, Ed. American Horticultural Society A To Z Encyclopedia Of Garden Plants (New York: DK Publishing, 1997). This huge tome is a treasure chest of information including growing zones, many photos, and extensive information about growing and caring for many species and varieties of plants. Since many biblical plants are quite unusual, this is one of few books that can provide information about many of them. The growing zones are especially important in discerning whether you can winter or summer a particular species in your area.

Brickell, Christopher, Ed. American Horticultural Society Pruning & Training (New York: DK Publishing, 1996). How do you prune each different tree or shrub as it grows? With many different plants in the Biblical garden, this encyclopedia is the only resource I've seen that explains and illustrates the unique care each plant needs.

Finding the Unusual (to us) Plants of the Bible:
PlantFinder (magazine) Hollywood, FL 33024. Also at http://www.hortworld.com/ How do you find a source for unusual plants? If you know a garden shop operator they may let you peruse this guide for sources for plants, many unusual. For wholesalers only, but many do sell retail.
You will have to hunt around to many suppliers to find the plants for your Biblical garden. No one place has them all.

Water Gardens:
Designing a water garden is a wonderful feat and a tremendous attraction for people of all ages. If it is to last well, the project demands a lot of study, planning, and hard work.

Robinson, Peter. American Horticultural Society Guide to Water Gardening. (New York: DK Publishing, 1997). The indispensable guide to creating a water garden with loads of colorful, inspiring photos.
Stadelmann, Peter. Water Gardens. (Hauppauge, NY: Barrons, 1992). Many practical insights for construction, plant selection and setting up a water garden.
Nash, Helen. The Complete Pond Builder. (Sterling, 1997) many titles that are based on extensive practical experience designing, establishing, and sustaining watergardens Filtration systems (see below) have taken a great advance in the few years since this was written.

Rolf C. Hagen (USA) Corp., Mansfield, MA 02048-1892
Laguna pond systems. Excellent quality, guaranteed, energy efficient, reasonably priced pump and filtration systems with snap connections - heavenly when you need to clean a filter, wash the fountain, etc. every week or two!!! http://rchwebs.rchagen.com/hagen/canada/english/ponds/index.html
Use their email to send questions.
A good biological and mechanical filtration system, a limited number of fish, and plenty of plants to cover most of the water surface will prevent algae from taking over and keep your pond balanced!
Buy a pump big enough. Both a fountain and a waterfall draw people to the gardens with their sound and motion. Consider benches for people to sit and visit and enjoy your pond. Also consider a sturdy fence in front of the water garden so people can lean and look without falling into the water!
If any children or animals could possible get into your pond, you must create shelves - steps on the sides so they can safely climb out. These are also helpful for placing pants at their favorite depths.
Winterizing:
We have constructed a removable roof to protect the pond in winter and have a small heater designed to keep animal water troughs from freezing to keep the pond surface from freezing over. Even in Vermont the goldfish winter well . Do not feed them after they become inactive!
The Bible:
Cross County Software, Online Bible. A fast, very economical program with many translations, Greek and Hebrew lexicons, searching by Strong's numbers. English translators' lack of botanical education make it necessary to searching by the Greek and Hebrew names of plants. I love this program. For Mac and Windows. http://davepohl.com/
Young, Robert, LL.D. Youngs Analytical Concordance to the Bible. (Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1975). English Bible translators are not botanists. In attempting to identify actual Biblical plants its necessary to search by their Hebrew or Greek names. This concordance organizes plants and other words based on their Greek and Hebrew names.
