1,000 bulbs planted at Worthington OH Biblical Garden!
Gardens of Eden, Egypt, Sinai, and more...

From the Rev. Arthur Hadley
I am the Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Worthington, OH. We are just beginning to plant a Biblical garden and have used your web site, and plant lists as a base. Last fall we planted over 1,000 bulbs in two plots of wheat to be the lilies of the field, also planted a weeping mulberry (alba), roses, wild olive (Russian olive) and Hypericum (St. John's wort). On order are rosemary, "Chicago" fig {hardy to zone 5}, apricot, tamarisk, grape and more. We are raising from seed or cuttings fig, olive, pomegranate, and date palm as a Sunday school project.

The design from east to west is: garden of Eden, Egypt, Sinai, land of milk and honey, Jesse tree (the Mulberry) new testament, resurrection (mostly Lilies), and monastic herbal. The garden is on the south side of our educational building and on the south side is the fenced playground which is mostly gravel giving us a nice desert. In the center of the garden linking the garden with the play ground will be a pergola with seating - either private meditation or an out door class room.

We are only a few blocks away from St. Michael's, Worthington, and Liberty Presbyterian (Columbus, OH) is 5 mile north; both on your list of Biblical gardens.

The other St. John's gardens include a cemetery dating from 1803 with over ten thousand daffodils, a section of prairie, and a woodland labyrinth. Lining the cemetery paths are flower beds. In front of an English Tudor style parish house is an English style garden of roses, lilies, hosta, asters, box wood etc. In front of the church is a spring display of Tulips and other spring bulbs and azalea.

Thank you for your assistance in researching the Biblical garden.

Biblical Gardens Receive National Media Coverage!

Bible Gardens Make CBS Radio!

On Friday October 25th Brian Morris from CBS radio visited our Biblical gardens to tape a program to air nationally around Thanksgiving. A segment of the Charles Osgood daily program, we caught some of our children making Grape jelly from grape juice they had made earlier from our Bible garden. We also recorded some of our adults planting bulbs and Marsh stirring the compost. Marsh also provided information about our Bible plants and the garden. Stay tuned to CBS and Charles Osgood around Thanksgiving!

We are happy to announce that the April 11th edition of the Christian Science Monitor
focused on Biblical Gardening in the Homefront section.
The article, "Flora Biblia" feature information about this web site and our gardens, along with the experiences of Jewish garden enthusiast JoAnne Gardner. Researched and written by Judy Lowe, Assistant Editor for the HomeFront section the page also includes beautiful, original graphic designs.

A related article "Mislabeled in Translation" offers a comparison of English translations of biblical plants and scientific names of the likely plants, along with links to other resources, including this site!
