For 25 years I taught earth science in high school and spent much of that time, and the years before that while I was in high school, college, and graduate school, learning to value the precision of science. I have also been teaching astronomy courses at Vermont Community College, where I further honed my instructional and analytical skills, which allow me to record changes in the sky both with the naked eye and with a telescope. During that time, for example, I drew the sketch of the Halebopp comet while looking through my telescope.

Over the last ten years, in addition to my work in the natural and physical sciences, I have been reading the birth charts that astrologers use for their analysis of personality and other dominant characteristics, which can be associated with chakras, health and well-being. For a short time, I looked at the birth charts constructed by computers, but I was disappointed. Though they are quick and precise, I found that computer readings cannot distinguish the nuances and finite distinctions in astrological observations, which I know exist and have spent my life refining the ability to recognize. In the end, I concluded that the success of the birth chart for analysis often depends on the human intuitive qualities associated with natal data. Without that human quality, it's less likely the birth chart will have any real meaning.

After my disappointment regarding the computer-generated readings, I traced the roots of natal chart construction. I discovered that while they require incredible amounts of work and artisanship, it is desirable to build a birth chart by hand. I am able to incorporate trends and prioritize the data within the birth charts which makes them far more valuable to an astrologer who's evaluating them. Finally, a methodology which meets my need for precision and yet values human artistry!
