Introduction:
Greetings! I grew up in a small Vermont town just south of the
Canadian
border (Montreal
is about 90 minutes north). After eighth grade, I went to Bellows
FreeAcademy
in St.
Albans since my hometown, Bakersfield,
Vermont,
didn’t have a high school. I spent a lot
of time in high school competing and performing all around the state.
For
example, I spent two years with the Vermont
Youth Orchestra as well as
several
years performing in local, state, regional, and New
England music festivals. I was also active in the drama
program
and peer counseling programs. In 1989, many musicals, concerts,
meetings,
classes, and performances later, I found my way to Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. It was a
big step
moving from a place where the roads often had wheel tracks with
grass
growing between them to a place where there were actually lanes of
traffic. As
some of my peers complained about how small Ithaca was, I couldn’t believe I was
becoming
such a city slicker!
By my sophomore year in college, I had decided to pursue English
with a
secondary teaching
certification rather than a degree in music performance and focused on
learning to become a teacher. After graduating in 1993, I met Heidi
(who was not a
“Dr.” yet)
and we became fast friends...fast. That same fall, I started working at
Otselic Valley Central School which
is where I
taught junior/senior high English. In addition
to
English classes, I also taught several electives ranging from Chess to
Argentine Tango to web and graphic design as well as volunteered to
chair a
number of committees and served as an officer in the teachers' Union.
During that time, I also went back to school for my MA degree at SUNY Cortland, earned tenure, and
created/enjoyed wonderful relationships with the people in the
community. Finally, Bound & Determined Publishers was born
in the summer of 2000 and What
We Want And Other Poems was finished, formatted, and published in
the fall
of that year.
Then, in the spring of 2001, Heidi and I left for Seoul,
South Korea.
After finishing her Ph.D. in adult education,
Heidi
found a job working with youth development trainers and technology for
the
Eighth United States Army,
and I found work as a full-time English instructor for Central Texas College-Pacific
Far East Campus, teaching undergraduate English and Communication
classes to servicmembers,
spouses,
and Korean nationals. It was great getting to meet and work with
the same kinds of people I had helped graduate from high school, only
now they were 20 years older, had families, and lots of
responsibility. In January of 2004, as a result of
the new United States Pacific Command contract that was awarded to
Central Texas College, several new administrative positions were
created at the headquarters for the Pacific Far East Campus, and as I
had proven myself in earlier re-accreditation efforts, I was
promoted to
Associate Dean of Support Services
and tasked to help resuscitate and manage distributed educational
services for the U.S. Military throughout Diego Garcia, Korea, Mainland
Japan, Okinawa, and Guam.
Most recently, Heidi and I packed up all our stuff and headed back
to the United States to be closer to family and get back to
nature. We landed in Brainerd, Minnesota, which is 7,000 miles
closer to Vermont than Korea, and a few hours from Heidi's
family. Additionally, one of our best friends from Korea also
moved to the United States with her husband, and they now live in
Michigan!
