Join the Union,
Join the fight!
What's
the Union do for you?
You've all heard the Bull Shit!
"What's the Union doing for me, why should I
be a member?" and "I don't like the
Union Steward so I'm getting out." Or the
classic, "I ain't joining, they got to
represent me anyways!"
Well the facts are simple. The
Union negotiates your pay and your benefits. We
represent you when you're hurt or in trouble. We
fight for better and safer working conditions. We
give you job security through senority. The
American Labor Movement brought you the forty
hour workweek and overtime! Your Union gives you
a loud and clear voice in in the halls of
Congress and they listen because they know Union
Members vote! Your Union gives you a voice in
your workplace as well. You elect the officials
that negotiate your contract with management, and
when your contract is violated you have a Steward
and a Collective Bargaining Process to insure
that you are made whole for the violation. These
are just some of the things that the Union does
for you!
If there was no Union in this
shop do you honestly think you would be making
your current wages? Take a look at the civil
service payscales for their GS 4 workers (http://www.opm.gov/oca/07tables/html/gs.asp).
If there were no Union, here is what you would be
earning for doing the same work!
To quote
APWU Local President Tom Kelly;
"The next
time you wonder what the union does for you, take
a look at the car you drive, the house you own,
the standard of living you have, and realize that
the union got these for you and that management
is hell bent on driving your standard of living
into the ground."
What's
the Union need from you?
We need you to
join and stay active. We also need you to help us
sign-up new
members!
Attend union meetings, learn your contract and
notify your Stewards of violations! You must be
willing to bear witness against management when
the time comes. You have to keep up on political
issues of the day and vote! Above all, stand
beside your brother and sister union members when
times get rough!
Negotiating and
enforcing your contract is an expensive and time
consuming business. Your dues money is the only
funding we have to keep and protect our Union and
our contract. Every non-union member takes away
from our ability to represent you to the best of
our abilities. They are robbing you of not only
your pay and your benefits, but of the strength
and ability of your Union to represent you.
Without a strong membership, we will never have
the power and ability to negotiate and enforce
our contract with management. The bottom line is,
if you want the pay and benefits, you have to
join the Union!
