1. Tell a little bit about yourself. What is your name? What do you do? What are your interests? Where do you live? Do others in your family use computers? Macintosh? etc.

Frada Kaplan, born and lived my whole life in Brooklyn, NY now living in Lyman, NH with my husband of ten year,Larry Haley,(a non computer user) two mastiff dogs and two cats. We raise pigs in the summer, trade one for lambs and one for chickens. for the freezer. I enjoy gardening, drives on back roads with the dogs in the back, often taking pictures of cows in the pasture, beautiful trees and landscapes. I love to spin all kinds of fiber. The White Mountain Spinners meet at my place the first and third Thursday of each month. I also love to knit. My three grown kids and two grandkids live in the NY/NJ area so we visit often.

I'm a hospice volunteer and a Lisbon School Board Member.

2. Describe your computer experience, when you first started using computers, the computer(s) you have now and their operating system(s). Include any comments such as what you think about Mac OS X.

As a former Principal in the NYC Board of Education, I had to learn how to use the computer in the early 90's. In this position I also had to review and order software for our students. (Broderbund Co. had some of the best) In my case my population was children 2.9-21yrs with severe disabilities, so I became familiar with many adaptations such as enhanced keyboards, controls, screen enlargements, etc. Everyone used an Apple computer then. I had a lot of difficulty getting the hang of it. after three courses for adults I sat in on classes being taught to my students (who had cognitive delays). I finally caught on. I bought an apple IIc for the house, but didn't use it much. Then I became active in an organization and wanted to do a date base of it's members. I finally had a reason to use it. In 94,through Apple's Educator's advantage program I ordered the Power Macintosh 7100/80 system that I am presently still using.

I've become adept at figuring minor interruptions, and controls. A major bombing is beyond me. I've updated to 4.3mg and now operating on a 8.6 system...I probably will not be able to use Mac X on my mac. although Midge did say in the last meeting that she ran some of it.

3. List the things you do with your computer and related equipment, why you do them, and what programs you use. What programs do you use the most or like the most? Do you use any unusual programs?

I used to love to scan pictures and send them to friends. (My SCSI cables have not been put back since the crash). ...I use microsoft word, e-mail. searches, making birthday and special occasion cards..... Keeping inventory of planting schedules Keep inventory of expenditures on raising pigs. I've recently started a new business and can use some of my programs to make a limited amount of business related material.

I belong to a non profit organization called WREN (woman's rural entrepreneurial network) that runs out of Bethlehem,NH. They use PC equipment and have the most sophisticated programs, printers etc. and offer classes on how to use them all. So, now all my new business cards, hangtags, fonts, are all on PC. I have it on a Zip, but don't have a zip drive at home. although it's formatted on a PC. and probably couldn't use it on my mac anyway. I use to have Virtual PC installed on a 2nd. hard drive, I used it some, but now use the hard drive for my back up stuff. I dislike all the different steps you have to use on the PC and love my mac, but..........I try not thinking about what to do if I have a major breakdown with my mac, and getting much pressure to convert with the next compute. I do feel alone with it (much better since I've joined your group NVMUG.)

4. Are there any presentations you would like to see or read about, or any you would like to make?

Maybe more hands on for repairs

5. If you appear to be the most informed NVMUG member related to a Macintosh user's question, may we e-mail question to you?
I can't imagine me knowing any more than anyone else. But certainly glad to help if I can.

6. May we share your response in an NVMUG eNewsletter on post it on a member's page on the NVMUG web site?

sure
