Last updated 9/07/2003

Sidney Austin died January 8, 2003, at the age of 80.

1. Tell a little bit about yourself. What is your name? What do you do? What are your interests? Where do you live? Do others in your family use computers? Macintosh? etc

Sidney Austin, Berry Hill Rd., Sheffield, VT. I retired from Northeastern University, Boston, MA in 1987 and Pat and I moved to Waterford that same summer. Seeking a smaller home and wanting to be closer to our grandchildren, we moved to Sheffield in 1996. My main hobby is woodworking. I have a fairly complete shop in which I have made a variety of furniture for my daughter's family who also live in Sheffield, for my son who lives in Calais, and for our home. I also assist Pat who is the gardner in the family. Both son and daughter own PC's.

2. Describe your computer experience, when you first started using computers, the computer(s) you have now and their operating system(s). Include any comments such as what you think about Mac OS X.

I acquired a Commodore 64 in the early 1970's. Since then I have added GEOS, RAMLink, and an HD-40 Hard Drive to the operating system. I still use this computer but found it is not suitable for email or access to the web. I acquired my iMac in October, 2000. When Northeastern installed its first main-frame computer I coordinated the use of this new technology to the operations of my department. I have to master OS 9 before I can even think about OS X.

3. List the things you do with your computer and related equipment, why you do them, and what programs you use. What programs do you use the most or like the most? Do you use any unusual programs?

My current use of th iMac is fairly simple. I use Outlook Express for email and Internet Exployer for the web. I use Appleworks 6 spreadsheet to maintain budget records and word processing to write to relatives and friends. Soon I intend to start using the data base program and to develop a household inventory of contents using Quicken. The only peripheral equipment I currently own is a color printer. I also use Tech Tool Pro 3 to check for problems.

4. Are there any presentations you would like to see or read about, or any you would like to make?

Not at this time.

5. If you appear to be the most informed NVMUG member related to a Macintosh user's question, may we e-mail question to you?

N/A

6. May we share your response in an NVMUG eNewsletter on post it on a member's page on the NVMUG web site?

Yes
