When I reviewed the first editon of iPhoto The Missing Manual
I wrote An iBook, with iPhoto, and a digital camera make a potent pair. But
something is missing, The Manual. Add
iPhoto: The Missing Manual
and the team is complete.
Things have changed. I now have a 12" PowerBook, iPhoto 5, and a new digital camera, but that statement is even more true.
The format of this book is almost the same as the first 2002 edition with four parts,
- Digital Cameras: The Missing Manual,
- iPhoto Basics,
- Meet Your Public, and
- iPhoto Stunts,
but this edition is in full color, has 100 more pages, and has been completely rewritten. With today's rapidly changing technology, authors must not have time to change what is already a winning format.
Part 1 - Digital Cameras
contains three chapters about digital photography and buying a digital camera, composing brilliant photos, and how professional photographers take better photographs in 19 different situations. This essential information for digital photographers has been brought up-to-date and improved with color, but the way professional photographers handle the situations has not changed since the earlier editions. If you have read it in one of the earlier editions, it is still worth reading again.
Part 2 - iPhoto Basics
contains three chapters, and all have been changed as much as iPhoto itself has changed in three years. It begins with an introduction to iPhoto and getting your pictures into iPhoto including the "post-dump" slide show that did not exist in 2002. Then it describes the "digital shoebox" with the new ways to organize and find your photos. It ends with editing your shots and the greatly improved tools in the Adjust Panel in iPhoto 5.
Part 3 - Meet Your Public
is about the ways you can use your photos and present them to others using iPhoto 5. It includes the new iPhoto 5 slideshow, sharing on-line, making prints and the improved iPhoto books, and showing your photos in iMovie and on iDVD.
Part 4 - iPhoto Stunts
includes screen savers, Applescript, cameraphones, and a section on iPhoto file management which is most important for those whose files become large, or whose computers are not the fastest.
Part 5 -The Appendix
covers the individual iPhotos menus, troubleshooting, and where to go for further information.
I may have to buy this book to finish organizing my iPhoto files because the instructions in my iPhoto The Missing Manual
for version 1.1.1 just do not cut it anymore.
