Take Control of Troubleshooting Your Mac
tells you in the introduction not to panic. Then there is a one page quick start to troubleshooting. There is a short chapter on preventing problems which most of us hopefully do, and a longer chapter on preparing for an emergency which most of us should but probably do not do. In this chapter he describes software that he recommends so that you can decide which, if any, diagnosis and repair software you want to buy.
In an excellent chapter he advises learning basic troubleshooting procedures before you have a problem and describes them. Then he tells you how to solve common problems, and how to troubleshoot novel problems.
There is a page of references where you can learn more.
This is one e-book that we should study, and print, before we have a problem - unless, of course, you have a good friend you can trust who is an Apple technician, who is is a user group guru, or who thoroughly knows what is in this book. You can purchase a printed copy through TIDBITS.
