This book was written in response to a classroom question by a future professional designer, Is there a good book about Mac OS X for designers.
There are a lots of good books about Mac OS X, but this book is intended only for graphic designers and future graphic designers. If you want to learn what a graphic designer should know about Mac OS X, and not technical information that is not relevant, take a look at this book.
Not all chapter titles are as clear about the subjects covered as these:
- The Tiger Finder
- Fonts
- Printing
- PD
- Color Management
- Networking
- The Classic Environment (for those who are still using it)
- Tools
- System Maintenance
- Security
As an example, the Tiger Finder includes Control-click (right-click if you have a two button mouse on something to see a contextual Menu containing a useful array of related tools. Interestingly, contextual menus have been around since Mac OS 8.5, and still many people are not aware of them. The chapter also includes advice about using Spotlight with an example a graphic designer would appreciate.
As another example, the chapter about Security includes advice about passwords and using the Keychain Access Application.
The Designer's Guide to Mac OS X Tiger
is very easy to read, and you do not need to be a budding graphic designer to read it. It is classified as being or Intermediate readers, but your might want to take a look at it from the NVMUG library if you are moving from a Windows operating system, or are a new user who knows what Control-click
means.
