REMEMBERING THE DAWN
by
    DENNIS SCHWARTZ

DESIRE
There is
always
something in
the dark
not found
and always
something
implied from
the moon
that shines
like a woman's
new dress.
DISTANCES
My dream is sucked up in blood,
ripped open in darkness,
and all I touch is wind.

THAT SUFFERING IS NOT REAL
It is on backroads I do not see
until I am on them. It opens up
to fields of sorrel and blackberries.
It disappears at dusk under the moon's odors.

MYKONOS
We try to discard
what is of
no value
but the years
slip by
and become the ships
that will take us
back to the mainland.
EXCUSES
It usually rains
when the system
is working
and soldiers are
found sleeping
on a sack of
potatoes
KANSAS
Inside the wind
a mind
that doesn't change.
In the cornfields
a wind
that is real or imagined.
NIGHTS
A purple light from the moon
breaks the monotony
of the snow.
The thin air
carries from the hills
the barking of a hundred dogs.
THE WORKING CLASS
The black sky
is a country
without roses
Tourists come here
winters and
promenade in the
evenings wearing
the only red shoes
they will ever have
PASSING THROUGH KANSAS
In Salina, I sat alone
under the moonlight.
the snow was yellow.
