Using the Clomicalm Plan to treat Separation Anxiety.
Symptoms of separation
anxiety include destructive behavior such as chewing and digging in the
house, barking and howling, and elimination problems. If your pet
is well behaved and house trained when you are home but wreaks havoc when
you are away he may well be suffering from separation anxiety. Other
common signs of this problem include:
following you from room
to room
obvious anxiety when
you prepare to leave
over enthusiastic greetings
when you arrive
The most important treatment
for this problem is behavior modification. There is also a new medication
to help you treat this problem. ClomicalmTM
is a tricyclic antidepressant similar to a number of medications
used to treat depression in people. The following behavior modification
plan is recommended along with the medication.
If you have any questions
about Clomicalm or you think your dog may be suffering from separation
anxiety please give us a call or drop us some email.
Riverside Pet
Hospital recommends Anipryl for treating Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome.
Some signs once
thought of as simply "old age" may actually be signs of a medical condition
known as canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS). Now Anipryl
offers new hope for the millions of families with dogs who suffer from
the behavioral changes associated with CDS.
Researchers believe
CDs is caused by physical and chemical changes that affect the brain function
in older dogs. Dogs with CDS may show signs of confusion and/or various
other behavioral changes that are not a normal part of aging. This
confusion can lead to a life of lonely isolation, separated from family
members who have come to cherish their older dog's companionship.
Some of the signs
of CDS include:
Disorientation
Wanders aimlessly
Appears lost or confused in house of yard
Gets "stuck" in corners or under/behind furniture
Stares into space or at walls
Does not recognize family people
Appears to forget reason for going outdoors
Interaction with family
members
Seeks attention less often
Less likely to stand for petting; walks away while being petted
Less enthusiasm upon greeting
No longer greets family members
Activity and sleep
Sleeps more during the day
Sleeps less during the night
Decrease in purposeful activity
Barks at night for no reason
House training
Urinates indoors
Has accidents indoors soon after being outside
Does not ask to go outside
Recapturing the good
times between you and your senior dog is now an exciting possibility thanks
to Anipryl,
the first and only drug cleared by the FDA to control the clinical signs
associated with canine cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. We can prescribe
Anipryl
after we diagnosis CDS. Anipryl
comes in a convenient tablet form for easy dosing. Most dogs are
prescribed one tablet each day, preferably in the morning.
If you suspect your
senior dog is showing signs of CDS, or if you have any questions about
Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome or Anipryl,
please give us a call or email
us. More information about Anipryl may also found at the Pfizer
web site.
Deadly Blue Green Algae Poisoning in Vermont
This summer several
dogs were poisoned by deadly toxins found in some types of blue green algae.
Although this is a well known poison we rarely see cases of algae poisoning
in this area. The dogs that were poisoned were exposed when they
ate some algae washed up on the shores of local lakes. Sadly all
three dogs died from this poison.
About Algae Poisoning
Algae poisoning is caused
by several toxins found in 3 types of blue green algae. These toxins
cause neurological damage, liver damage and gastrointestinal damage.
Symptoms occur very rapidly after the algae is consumed. These symptoms
include seizures, muscle tremors, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Death often occurs rapidly within 1-2 hours after ingestion of the algae.
Treatment for this
poisoning is not always effective even if instituted rapidly. There
is no specific antidote for the toxins in blue green algae. Veterinarians
can only treat the symptoms and flush out the toxin with fluids.
Preventing Algae Poisoning
This poison can only
cause illness if it is ingested so be sure to keep your pet from eating
plant material in and around the water. This problem usually occurs
in the midwestern United States. The extremely hot and dry weather
this summer is probably the reason we had a problem in Vermont. Therefore
be sure to keep your pets away from green plant material especially during
severe summer weather.
