Putney Central School offers a rigorous academic program and small class sizes to seventh and eight grade students.
Math integrates algebra, geometry, number sense, problem solving, and probability. Motivated math students can join the after school math club, which regularly brings home honors in state competitions.
Art is taught in an enormous, impressively equipped art studio (kiln, loom, easels, and abundant painting and drawing supplies) and is taught through an interdisciplinary approach that imparts a deep understanding of cultures around the world and of art and art history.
Middle school students study Chinese. They also study Asian culture as part of the schools ongoing Asian Studies program, which received an award from the University of Vermont and recognition from UVM as a model for such programs throughout the state.
Middle school can study chorus, guitar or a band instrument and have at least two performance opportunities every year.
The school has an approximately 800 sq. foot library with over 6400 volumes.
Science looks concertedly at ecology, geology, chemistry, biology, and mechanics and emphasizes practical applications and experimentation.
Literature immerses students in reading great books and poetry and invites from students both creative and critical responses to the material they read.
The Social Studies program teaches active inquiry and decision-making. Students learn to be responsible, informed citizens of the world.
In English/Language Arts students find their voice and learn to express it (both in written text and in public speaking opportunities) with creative independence.
The after school Sports program includes league teams for both boys and girls in soccer, basketball, baseball and softball.
Putney Central offers certified help for students with learning differences and has a full-time counselor on staff.
