The Historical Society of Windham County began meeting in the late 1920's. The idea for a county-wide society to preserve artifacts related to Windham County came from Clara Chipman Newton whose ancesters settled on Newfane Hill after the American Revolution"Once the Society began receiving artifacts, there became a need for storing and displaying them. The Society members began a building fund and the cornerstone of the present museum was laid on August 5, 1936. The museum was constructed with two floors of galleries and one additional floor of storage.
The Society is currently involved in a building program for a storage and conservation facility. Besides seeking additional funds for its construction, the Society always welcomes new members to join. The cost varies from Individual ($7), Family ($10), Organization ($15), Contributing ($25) to a Sustaining member ($50).
