The preservation of Salem's records and historical materials were made possible by grants from the NYS Archive and Records Administration. The researcher who is interested in community or family history will find a wealth of information. The Bancroft Library and the Town Clerk maintain detailed guides to the holdings which may be reviewed in preparation for research. ACCESS AND USE POLICYThe town historian maintains a series of municipal and historical and archival records. These records are stored in the Bancroft Library and the Town Clerk's Office. The library telephone number is 518-854-7463 and research hours, except for holidays, are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m., and Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. by appointment. The Town Office hours are Monday, Wednesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon. The historian is available by appointment, usually during the town office hours. Other hours may be arranged by calling 518-854-3277 or 3527 Because the collections are secured, researchers are requested to call ahead to make an appointment so that an archival clerk, librarian or the historian can assist them. Researchers must agree to comply with the archival rules and regulations of the town and village of Salem in order to use the material.
