"Simple Gifts" is our hilarious and heartwarming holiday video. After touring their holiday show throughout the northeast and midwest for fifteen years, Peter and Stephen filmed "Simple Gifts" with live audiences in 2002. The video was produced by Marlboro VT film maker Alan Dater and features a soft sculpture set designed and built by Joan Peters of Guilford VT.

With money short, the hour late and snow drifts rising, Gould & Stearns find themselves in a cheap motel, on tour far from home in December. As snow piles up outside, Peter and Stephen are restless. To while away the hours, they tell each other stories of Christmases and Chanukahs past.

They act out the story of Giovanni, the poor clown who had nothing to give at holiday time but the gift of laugher. Like two kids in their pajamas, they get sillier as the night runs on. They bring to life a St. Nick who gets stuck in the chimney, eats too much candy and constantly trips over the puns in the poem "The Night Before Christmas."

Stephen anxiously tries to order last-minute gifts, but Peter insists that "the gifts of the heart are the best gifts of all". Together they write a song that tells how to create warmth, simple giving and humor at the coldest time of the year.

By the end of the evening, tired but happy, Gould & Stearns have shown us that even two travelers, in a cheap motel and far from their families, can create merriment, wonder and contagious joy. After all, isn't that what the holidays are all about?
