Stephen Stearns' Biography

Professor Stearns's comic genius sprouted in the rich, fertile soil of his seven-year-old dyslexic mind (read: space shot). His mesmerizing rendition of the "Old Oaken Bucket" in the school play brought wild applause, which he mistook for approval.

Alas, the fate of thousands of future audiences worldwide was sealed.

In a desperate attemp to conquer his dyslexia and discover the meaning of life, our intrepid "space cadet" overachieved his way to a doctorate in Shakespeare and a post-doctorate degree from England's prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.

Eureka! The meaning of life was Obvious!

He became a clown, irresponsibly spreading contagious joy and laughter to stressed-out people around the world.

In his spare time along the way, he has founded a State Arts Project; given keynote addresses on humor and wellness throughout New England; involved families in comic antics at the annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House and on the sloop Clearwater on the Hudson River; clowned with orphans in Russia with Maria's Children; and performed in major theatres from Canada to Honduras, L.A. to Lewiston, and Lincoln Center to Queen Elizabeth Hall, England.

A master of audience rapport, Professor Stearns is equally comfortable with Corporate Executives, Teen Age Dudes, and preschool Rug Rats.

One Man Shows:

Laugh Me to the Moon is a hilarious performance of physical comedy, mime illusion, music, magic, wit and wisdom served on a bed of humorous stories by funnyman, Stephen Stearns. No doubt about it, he is one of New England's premier comedians. The New England Storytelling Festival says, "As animated as the Marx Brothers and as commanding as Laurence Olivier."

Stephen Stearns' rubber face and body produce physical illusions that are pure magic while his stories will touch your heart. He is a master of audience rapport who can make everyone in an audience of a thousand feel like part of his own special family. One audience member says, "It's so great to be silly and laugh. He's wonderful!" And, man oh man, can he play ragtime ukulele!

Laugh Me to the Moon is a laugh a second show. A feel great about yourself show. A show to bounce you into tomorrow and land you on your feet. A show to make you want to hug the kids, the neighbors, the dog, the planet and scream at the top of your lungs, "I'm ready! Laugh Me to the Moon."

In "Right Under Your Nose," Stephen teaches children some of the physical tricks of being a clown. But, more important, he demonstrates that determination, empathy, creative thinking and a sense of humor are tools we all can use to turn mistakes and set-backs into opportunites for growth.

Stephen adds songs, mime illusion, audience participation, comedy and common sense to stories of his own childhood - to focus on respect for individuality and honesty, and to suggest ways to use positive choices, and a sense of humor, to negotiate the "speed bumps" of growing up.

Funnyman Stearns sports a character that is part child, part buffoon, part fool, part philosopher, part teacher, and part coach. That's a lot of parts! They all get together to demonstrate the importance of determination, self reliance, patience, creative thinking, empathy and tolerance for people with hadicaps.
