Stolen Weathervane
Howe Farms
Route 110
Tunbridge, VT

On the night of July 11-12 the large Cow weathervane was stolen from a barn erected by Walter K. Howe in the early 1900s. On that night the thieves were unsuccessful in their attempts to steal the large Steer weathervane from a twin barn erected by Walter's brother Sylvester Howe in the same time period. The thieves left behind two plywood cutouts in the shape and size of the weathervanes, the barns standing forty-five feet tall and the cupalos nearly fifty, it appears that the thieves had all they could do to remove one weathervane in the cover of darkness.

The following pictures are of the remaining weathervane, it measures 33" in length and stands 18" at the shoulder. It is made of copper with another metal for ears and horns. The tails on the weathervanes seem to be uncommon to other cow weathervanes. It is family lore that the cow weathervane that was stolen measures a bit wider than the steer at 3-4" thick in the body.

These family farms are going on to six generations now. We would like to regain possession of the weathervane. Any help in locating the stolen weathervane would be appreciated. You can contact the Vermont State Police in Bethel, Vermont at (802) 234-9933 or contact jodyh@sover.net
