Welcome to Vermont Recovery Education located at Vermont Psychiatric Survivors in Rutland, Vermont. We offer trainings and cycles on recovery throughout Vermont.
Yes, even us with a psychiatric disability can recover as anyone with a physical disability. We don't offer magic or quick cures but we let you know how peer support, exercise, right diet, and education on informed choices can assist you in a better quality of life.
We don't provide therapy but education to increase hope and assist you in setting up a WRAP plan for you to follow daily in your life.
Ask any one of these recovery educators and they will tell you all about it:
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Attached is poster about the project I have been working on
for the last several months, Updates
or really I should say I have been HONORED to work on for the last several months.
I was invited to interview people who have lived through psychiatric hospitalization
and recovered from a diagnoses of severe mental illness to live happy, healthy
and fulfilling lives.
Some of you know that I worked in a lock down mental institution in my twenties
and there was never the hope of anyone coming out of there, certainly not recovered
from their illness and hopeful of a healthy and bright future. In speaking to
people about this audio series I have found that many people are under the same
impression. I had no idea recovery was possible.
These stories have been compiled into an audio series entitled "Voices of Hope
and Recovery- Our Stories, Our Lives" and are a testament to the power of the
human spirit to prevail over unbelievable odds. I have met and spoken with people
who were committed, many against their wills, to mental institutions; being
drugged, shocked, isolated and forgotten.
How did they do it? How did they learn to take control of their lives? How did
they get out of there?
Some were literally rescued, some began, little by little to exercise; to become
free of numbing medication, to voice their distrust of a system that isolated
and confined them. Many were inspired by others who had been there, who had
survived and had written about it. This just for starters.
I wanted to take this time to invite you to visit the website where these stories
are available:www.ncmhcso.org , abbreviated
for The National Coalition of Mental Health Consumer Survivor Organizations.
This is an amazing organization that provides a voice in Washington for people
who have been diagnosed with severe mental illness, or who are still hospitalized.
It is comprised of people who have survived institutionalization as well as
loved ones and family members who are trying desperately to change the policies
and stigma that keep us all in the dark ages.
I can't really express how much I appreciate getting to listen to these inspirational
stories and meet the warm, courageous and compassionate people who tell them.
So, when you get a moment go to the website. Feel free to order the set of stories
or a few of the single stories. Be prepared, it you are like me and most of
the people I have shared with, you will be left speechless and inspired, strengthened
and encouraged.
These stories connect us all to our humanity and remind us of the need for all
of us to be useful to our families and communities, to feel worthy, to love
and yes, to be loved for who we are.
Feel free to write back with any of your own stories, comments, intuitions,
and appreciations,
Sincerely,
Marliese
